We are in Greater Hyderabad now. A mega city that covers 625 sq. km. of municipal corporation area and 6852 sq. km. of metropolitan area. It is fast emerging as the hub of IT/ITES, Biotech, Pharma and Tourism sector. Its strategic geographical location, multilingual and cosmopolitan culture, tremendous growth potential and investment-friendly economic policy are all making it an attractive destination for corporates, entrepreneurs, academicians and homemakers alike.

Its population stands at 7.8 milion and is projected to touch 13.64 million by 2021.

Currently, over 2.4 million personalized vehicles ply on Hyderabad roads, with an addition of 0.20 million vehicles every year.

7.8 million motorized trips are made every day, of which, only about 3.28 million or 42% are made by the Public Transportation System (PTS) i.e. buses and local trains. That means the rest of the trips are made by personal vehicles leading to traffic bottlenecks, high pollution levels and a steep increase in fuel consumption.

A people-friendly city is that which provides a good quality of life. An efficient, safe, reliable and comfortable public transportation system is one of the pre-requisites of good living

The increasing pressure of the burgeoning population is putting Hyderabad's Transportation System under constant pressure. The need of the hour is a robust system that is dependable, comfortable, affordable and sustainable.

The answer lies in Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS). Accordingly, the development of Metro Rail was approved for 71.16 km., covering three high density traffic corridors of Hyderabad. The Project will be developed on BOT basis in PPP mode.

Hyderabad Metro Rail is all set to bring to the citizens, an international urban transportation experience through its quality-intensive, comfort & safety oriented features. The Project Report, made by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, was the result of an extensive study of the geophysical features of routes, international best practices and economics. The Project is expected to be completed at an estimated cost of Rs. 12,132 crore.

Two tracks (up and down lines) on elevated viaduct of 9m wide erected on pillars in the central median of roads

Standard gauge track (1435 mm) to allow sharper curves and gradients

Speeds of 34 kmph on an average to 80 kmph max

Elevated world-class stations at 1 km distance with passenger access through staircases, escalators and lifts

Frequency of 3 to 5 minutes – is expected to carry about 16.38 lakh passengers p/day by 2011 and 26.76 lakh passengers p/day by 2021

Continuously welded rails to minimize noise levels

Power supply through third rail bottom collection

AC coaches with automatic door movements and many other safety and comfort features

Automatic Train Control (ATC), Automatic Train Protection (ATP) & upgradation to Automatic Train Operation (ATO)

The Metro Rail System has proved to be the most efficient in terms of energy consumption, space occupancy and numbers transported

Hi-capacity carriers – very high volumes of peak hour peak direction trips

Eco-friendly – causes no air pollution, much lesser sound pollution

Low energy consumption – 20% per passenger km in comparison to road-based systems

Greater traffic capacity – carries as much traffic as 7 lanes of bus traffic or 24 lanes of car traffic (either way)

Very low ground space occupation – 2 meters width only for elevated rail

Faster – reduces journey time by 50% to 75%

Hyderabad Metro Rail will connect

Miyapur with L.B.Nagar – 29.87 km, touching 27 stations within 45 mins (Bus – 1 hr 45 mins)

Secunderabad to Falaknuma – A 14.78 km stretch, with halts at 16 stations within 22 mins (Bus 1 hr 20 mins)

Nagole and Shilparamam – Tracking 26.51 km across 23 stations within 39 mins (Bus 1 hr 22 mins)

All stations will have efficient feeder bus services ("Merry go round" air conditioned buses)

Terminals & junctions will be specially connected to BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit System) routes being developed under JNNURM

Effective integration & interchange with rail terminals at Nampally, Secunderabad and Begumpet

Efficacious integration & interchange with bus stations at Miyapur, Imliban, MGBS, Dilsukhnagar, Charminar & Jubilee Bus Station.

Link to MMTS services at Bharatnagar, Begumpet, Khairatabad, Malakpet & Falaknuma

Adequate parking and circulating area for linking with other modes of transport

Under VGF scheme, Rs. 2363 Crore (20% of the project cost) already sanctioned

However, with the successful lowest bidder asking for "Zero" grant (capital subsidy), VGF Grant is now irrelevant

Financial Bids received and opened on July 23, 2008

Bidder (M/s Magna Allmore led consortium-L2) sought ‘zero' grant and further offered to pay periods of Equity Contribution. Discounted at the PLR (Prime Lending Rate) of 13.5% as on the Bid opening date (as furnished by SBH), the Net Present

value (NPV) of this amount works out to Rs.152 cr. i.e. a negative Grant of Rs.152 cr. The lowest Bidder (M/s Nava Bharat led consortium –L1) also sought ‘zero' Grant and further offered to pay different amounts at different time periods of Concession

, which total up to Rs.30311cr. Discounted at 13.5% PLR, the NPV works out to Rs.1240 cr. i.e., a negative Grant of Rs.1.240cr.

With good inter- modal connectivity between the Metro Rail stations and MMTS stations, major railway stations of Secunderabad, Nampally, Begumpet & all the bus

terminals, “seamless travel facility” will be created in the city.

All stations will have air conditioned “Merry go round” mini-bus services, connecting nearby colonies, business establishments and other popular places.

Terminals and junctions will be connected with BRTS routes.
